Joey listened patiently, and then she said something daunting and prophetic: "Just remember, you're going to have to go on like seventeen bad dates before you have a good one."
I knew she was right. If anything, I worried her estimate was a little conservative. Only in the movies does the girl get to rebound right into the arms of her next great love. In life you have to kiss a few more frogs before you find anybody with prince potential, and seventeen frogs sounded like a decent estimate.
So I decided to get started. I knew from past breakups that I'd be miserable for a while, so why not get my bad dates out of the way while I was miserable, I reasoned. Otherwise I'd have to be miserable twice. I enlisted the help of everyone I knew, letting them know that I was available and ready to be fixed up, and that I was expecting to have a terrible time, so all pressure was off. In addition, I decided to drop whatever standards I had left and try an online dating service or two. The more the merrier. The point of this exercise was quantity over quality.
I hesitate to describe each of my seventeen dates because I hate to put you through that, and frankly, I have tried so hard to forget. At one point when I was knocking out three dates a week, my friend and co-worker, Michael Patrick King, said it seemed like I wasn't so much dating as doing push-ups. Here are the highlights:
The whole thing started with a bang. Literally.
